about

Originally released in 1965 (CBS 6154)
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
In the French 60’s, Jean-Pierre Kalfon, who only thinks of going with the flow of his desires, is confronted with a choice. Either being an actor with impeccable filmography or living a life of psychoactive rocker in the Paris underground. He didn’t hesitate for a second: he opted for both.
Today, considered as a cult actor, his true passion may have always been rock’n’roll and rhythm’n’blues. In 1965, shortly before playing the role of Simon the Magician in Les Idoles (a situationist film directed by Marc’O in 1968), Kalfon had released an EP on CBS, not far from his movie character. “With bangs à la Rolling Stones, a fuzz guitar and a slightly screwed-up tone, this UFO didn’t find his audience at the time but is today a must.” says Patrick Eudeline, French writer and rock journalist.
Listen! The turbulent Chanson Hebdomadaire anticipates French punk by ten years, announcing the snotty persiflage of Les Olivensteins, the slightly devastated urgence of Asphalt Jungle and the cheeky debauchery of Rita Mitsouko. The three other tracks are genuine pop culture pieces, theatralized by the protest’actor Kalfon and magnificently arranged by Michel Portal and Ivan Jullien. La Guerre is an explosive anti-militaristic folk-rock, My Friend, Mon Ami is a stunning “chansong” with a touch of crazy and L’Amour À Fleur De Peau, co-written with Valérie Lagrange, is a ballad without chiqué worthy of Saravah productions.
More than 50 years later, Kalfon himself remembers it in his bigger-than-life biography: “My record failed to sell. I couldn’t carry a tune in a wheelbarrow, which is much to my credit. Being a prehistoric punk — ten years too early in France — this was neither the place nor the time to get right on it.”
Kalfon became a unique personality in French theatre and cinema but also an accomplished singer and songwriter (he was signed on the mythical Parisian label New Rose). His presence, voice and diction are so magnetic in movies that their counterparts in 60’s pop music inevitably bring us back to Serge Gainsbourg. It’s by no means the least of compliments the staff at Pop Supérette can give him, you’ve guessed it.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

about

Pop Supérette Records Toulouse, France

J.-P. Kalfon embodies the coolitude of the 60s & 70s in France. He's the link between the first hippies and the first punks, by far more connected to N.Y.C. than Kathmandu. Actor with impeccable theatrography & filmography, he was also a true rock'n'roller in his bigger-than-life trajectory. Check out his bio "Tout Va Bien, M'man" about him doing his "400 blows".
